My Favourite History Place: Castle Hill, Huddersfield
It’s often the way that we ignore what’s geographically close to us when we visit historical places of interest, preferring instead to travel further afield to look and wonder. So it was with me. I had visited Castle Hill as a child, and as a teenager, I’ve even been there with my sons when they were younger, but only very infrequently, and it wasn’t until we were in lockdown (again) that I was inspired to go back there.
Castle Hill is as it says in the title, a castle on a hill near Farnley Tyas, a small village to the south of Huddersfield, set among rolling hills and pasture. But, don’t let the name fool you as it did me as a child: it is a hill, but it’s not a castle…
