Horrible History Circles

History goes round in circles
watch it and you’ll see.
What goes around comes around
and that’s what frightens me.

What about those Egyptian slaves,
that built the pyramids for free?
No one asked them to help,
they had no choice you see.
So much pain inflicted by the insane.

History goes round in circles
watch it and you’ll see.
What goes around comes around
and that’s what frightens me.

The Romans were rotten it’s true,
conquering all who got in their way.
Crucifying thousands more than just Jesus,
just because they didn’t obey.
Crosses of pain and wood that was stained.

History goes round in circles
watch it and you’ll see.
What goes around comes around
and that’s what frightens me.

The black death was gruesome beyond belief,
and many years ago millions died alone.
No medicines or herbs could cure it,
and it cut right through to the bone.
Horrible pain watching puss boil and drain.

History goes round in circles
watch it and you’ll see.
What goes around comes around
and that’s what frightens me.

Like vampires in far off mountains,
that impale people just for fun.
And children in America
that learn to use a gun.

Lots of pain and nothing to gain.
History goes round in circles
watch it and you’ll see.
What goes around comes around
and that’s what frightens me.

And as for those Victorians steeped in slums,
with workhouses using children to sweat and toil.
Thought they’d banished slavery didn’t they?
and yet it rears its ugly head as kids burn and broil.
More pain again, and again and again.

History goes round in circles
watch it and you’ll see.
What goes around comes around
and that’s what frightens me.

Horrible History Circles

I wrote this poem at the request of my friend Tim Pointon who I worked with on the scaryness.com website – the one for children’s spooky poetry where I’ve had a few published.

It came to me that history goes around in circles and that we don’t always learn, so I put together a few verses to that effect with reference to the use of slaves across the centuries. I added a few more verses for Tim and he kept the refrain in and I think it works well. It also made me realise that although I tend not to like ‘writing to order’ as it were, I can do it and sometimes they come out really well!
